Superintendent John Perales explains the new A-G graduation requirements approved by the Board of Trustees. These new rules will go into effect next year with the class of 2020:

What are the A-G requirements?

To be considered for admission to a University of California campus, such as U.C. Berkeley or UCLA, as well as private colleges and universities, students must complete 15 yearlong high school courses with a grade of C or better — at least 11 of them prior to their senior year.

Keep in mind that taking approved high school (“A-G”) courses isn't the only way to satisfy these requirements. Students may also meet them by completing college courses or Advanced Placement Courses (AP Classes) and complete the AP exams for each particular course with a passing score.

For California State University schools, such as San Jose State University, the "A-G" courses are also a requirement.
Doing well in "A-G" courses will also help our students in community colleges, professional schools and wherever after-high-school life will take them.

San Benito High School will be adopting the A-G requirements as our high graduation requirements. I truly believe in giving ALL of our students options their senior year. For example, a student may choose to apply to a 4-year school, attend a community college, enter a trade school or serve our country in the Armed Forces. Whichever path a student may choose, the KEY is that they have options their senior year and are well prepared academically. I believe these graduation requirements will increase the learning rigor of all students and help our students reach their dreams! Please know that we are not jumping into this undertaking blindly. We know we must provide our students with additional support to help them meet these new requirements. I always use the lens of my own children and these are my expectations for them - these must be the expectations for all of our children!
