Spanish Syllabus

Course Description: This foreign language course will be taught inductively. Students will learn Spanish grammar, culture, literature, and music, among other aspects of the language through problem based learning methods. This is a High School Spanish Program where the class objective is to understand the Spanish Culture and communicate with Spanish Speaking people. We will reach out to bond with students in Equatorial Guinea, a country with a history of Spanish culture in Africa and the students will have pen pals on that side of the world. This is one of several projects in the course. Others will include the Felt Poetry Book where students will learn a short play. Watching a series of Spanish Whodunits to determine the culprit. Students shall also create their own Spanish-English key ring dictionary adding vocabulary used in class throughout the year from which they will be challenged to create sentences, essays and writing pieces.

End of Term Presentation
A written paper of approx. 2 pages handed to the teacher on one of the units studied during the year. This MUST be a hard copy. The criteria for the paper will be based upon the following checklist 1. Accomplished the task 2. Has a clear beginning middle end 3. Includes a variety of vocabulary 4. Uses relevant and accurate words 5. Exhibits some control of the syntax and structure 7. Errors do not interfere with overall comprehension 8. In target language 9. Uses relevant and accurate words 10. Comprehensible
Presentation of approx. 10 minutes to reteach what the students have learnt. Presentation must include a visual and a participatory activity
Students will keep a journal prepared by the teacher for each class. After each presentation, the student will write down the main idea of the lesson taught. Criteria for questions to be answered will be determined and provided by the teacher.
If a student misses a presentation of another student, the student will research and write a one page overview for each presentation missed. This will be due within 48 hours. If a student misses their own presentation, the student will film the presentation outside of school and give the presentation on a dvd or jump drive to the teacher within 48 hours.
Advanced Topic Credit
A student wishing to take a course for Advanced Topics credit will be expected to conduct an independent project once a year. The projects may include:
Reading an additional book of at least 250 pages or a combination of readings.
A research paper of a minimum of 20 pages and a bibliograghy with a minimum of 15 sources. Research paper will be in 12 point font.

The program will follow the Standards for Foreign Language Learning:
Students engage in conversations, provide and obtain information, express feelings and emotions and exchange opinions.Students will keep a journal prepared by the teacher for each class.
